COMPLIANCE: CLASSIFIED RESEARCH

JHU Home Page

OBJECTIVE

Johns Hopkins University endorses faculty participation in research in the national interest. At the same time, however, the University’s commitment to openness in documentation and dissemination of research results prohibits conducting classified research activities or using classified information on its academic campuses. Consequently, the Applied Physics Laboratory, which is not an academic division, is a suitable location for conducting classified research projects.

COMMITTEE ON RESEARCH INFORMATION PRACTICES

The Senior Institutional Official at Johns Hopkins responsible for Compliance is Dr. Theodore O. Poehler (profile), Vice Provost for Research. Dr. Poehler is Chair of the Johns Hopkins University's Committee on Research Information Practices. This Committee has been formed in compliance with the University’s Policy on Classified and Otherwise Restricted Research and charged with the following:

  • The Committee reviews all matters concerning classified, “sensitive” and proprietary research.

  • The Committee has cognizance over the policy for classified, “sensitive” and proprietary research areas.

  • The Committee continues to review the federal policies and practices as well as program requirements from various other funding sources, and recommend an appropriate Johns Hopkins response to these issues.

  • The Provost appoints all members of the Committee
